Handmade Soap vs Commercial Soap: What's Different?
Share
Handmade soaps have made quite the comeback over the last few years. But beyond the pretty swirls and lovely fragrances, is there really a difference? Short answer: yes. Here are a few things most people don't know.
1. Handmade soaps are naturally rich in glycerin.
Glycerin is a natural humectant, meaning it helps attract and retain moisture in your skin. Most handmade soaps retain this glycerin, which is one reason they often feel gentler after washing. In large-scale commercial soap manufacturing, glycerin is often separated during processing and may or may not be added back later, depending on the formulation.
2. No two bars are ever exactly the same.
Factory-made soaps are designed to look identical. Handmade soaps? Not so much. Small differences in colour, texture, or pattern aren't imperfections, they're a reminder that someone actually made them by hand. We think that's part of their charm.
3. Why does handmade soap become smaller over time?
It's completely normal. Handmade soaps contain more natural moisture than many heavily processed bars. As they cure further and are used, some of that water slowly evaporates, making the soap slightly smaller while helping it become firmer. Pro tip: keep your soap on a draining soap dish instead of letting it sit in water — it'll last significantly longer.
4. More bubbles doesn't always mean a better soap.
We've somehow been taught that bigger foam means better cleaning, but not necessarily. Many commercial soaps use additional foaming agents to create lots of lather, while handmade soaps usually produce a softer, creamier lather that's designed to cleanse without making your skin feel overly stripped.
5. Your soap is part of your skincare too.
Think about it, it's the very first product that touches your skin every single day. Choosing ingredients that work with your skin instead of against it can make more difference than we often realise. Sometimes, skincare begins before the serum.
At QISSA, every soap is handcrafted in small batches using a glycerin-rich base, thoughtfully blended with ingredients like coffee, charcoal, aloe vera, neem, citrus, and botanicals inspired by our collections and travels. Because if something becomes part of your everyday ritual, we think it deserves a little more thought than just smelling nice.
With love, always.
