BODH: The Beauty Of Unfinished Answers

Banaras, India (Sept, 2021)

There are some trips you plan, and then there are some that happen because staying where you are feels harder. Banaras was one of those. When we arrived, neither of us was looking for inspiration or a collection or anything, really. We were simply trying to make sense of a season that had left us carrying more than we knew what to do with.
Grief has a strange way of doing that. It doesn't always arrive loudly. Sometimes it just settles - into the silence after dinner, into conversations that don't happen anymore, into phone calls you still instinctively want to make to someone who won't pick up. And so we carried it with us onto trains, into tea stalls, through crowded streets that didn't know or care what we were holding. All the way to Banaras.

What we didn't expect was how naturally the city seemed to understand. Banaras doesn't ask you to be okay. It simply exists - fully, unapologetically in the middle of everything life is. The fire and the flowers, the chaos and the stillness, the prayers and the silence after them. Life and death here share the same ghats, the same mornings, the same air. The city has watched people arrive carrying something and leave carrying something entirely different for centuries, and it hasn't flinched once. Nothing about it asks you to look away from the uncomfortable, tender truth: nothing lasts, and this is not a tragedy. It simply is.

Standing in the middle of all of it, something in us quietly shifted. Not healed, not fixed- just shifted. Like something held very tightly for a very long time was finally allowed to just be held, without needing to be solved or mean anything more than what it was. A loss. A love. A chapter that ended before we were ready. A knot that doesn't disappear, but softens slowly in its own time.

We spend so much of our lives waiting to feel complete, waiting for the grief to pass, for the clarity to arrive, for the version of ourselves that has it together to finally show up.
But Banaras doesn't believe in that. It reminded us that meaning isn't always waiting at the end. Sometimes it lives in the middle, in the uncertainty, in the things that remain beautifully and honestly unresolved. That some things are simply part of us now, and that's not a failure, that's just what it means to have loved something, to have been changed by it.

Maybe that's what BODH means to us. Not a revelation or an awakening, just a quieter kind of understanding. The kind that comes when you stop asking life to make sense on your timeline and allow it to simply be what it is- heavy sometimes, gentle too, worth loving anyway.

Some lessons unfold slowly, over years, over ordinary Tuesday mornings when something small reminds you of something large and you sit with it, and it doesn't break you the way you thought it would. This was one of them. And if you're carrying something right now that doesn't fit neatly into words, something that still lives somewhere in your chest long after people have told you to move on, then maybe Banaras has something for you too. Not answers. Just the quiet, ancient reminder that you are not the only one who has ever stood here, holding something heavy, wondering how to carry it forward. And that somehow, people do. They always have.

Every collection begins with a feeling. What follows are the ways we try to hold on to it through scents, textures, sketches, keepsakes, and stories. We'll tell you about those another time. For now, we're just really glad you stopped by.
With love, always.
