9 Things We'd Tell Anyone Visiting Goa
Share
The beaches will find you. These are the little things we hope do too.
Everyone has a Goa guide. This isn't one of them. These aren't the biggest attractions or the most Instagrammable cafés, they're simply the little things that made our trip slower, fuller, and far more memorable. If you're planning a few days in Goa, here's what we'd tell a friend before they leave.
1. Don't Rush Your Evenings
Everyone will tell you where to watch the sunset. Here's what we'd tell you instead, don't make it another stop on your itinerary. Almost every evening, we ended up on a different beach around golden hour. We weren't chasing the "best" sunset, we were simply letting the day end there. Palolem was soft and pink. Agonda felt almost private. Candolim gave us the last sunset of the year. Looking back, none of them looked the same. If you're planning a Goa trip, leave your evenings free. You'll never regret giving a sunset more time than you planned.
2. Buy the Clothes
Don't overthink your Goa wardrobe before you leave, half the fun is finding it there. We came back with wrap-around pants, shell jewellery, anklets, beach shirts, hats, and somehow another bag. There's something about Goa that makes you dress differently. Lean into it. Years later, those clothes will remind you less of fashion and more of the holiday itself.
3. Don't Café Hop. Café Stay.
Goa has incredible cafés, but our favourite memories weren't about the food, they were about staying. Watching a reunion unfold at the next table. Reading one more chapter because nobody was in a hurry. Ordering another coffee simply because leaving felt unnecessary. Instead of visiting five cafés in a day, spend two hours in one. You'll remember that much longer than the menu.
4. Drive If You Can
Renting a car turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Not because driving was easier, but because it made spontaneity possible. Some of our favourite cafés weren't planned, neither were a few beaches, tiny shops, or roadside stops that never made it to Instagram. Goa is one of those places where the drive quietly becomes part of the destination.
5. Visit Both South & North Goa
People always ask us "South or North?" and our answer is always both. South Goa gave us empty beaches, quiet cafés, and mornings that felt like they had nowhere to be. North Goa brought shopping, lively streets, Christmas lights, music, and just the right amount of chaos. They're completely different moods, and that's exactly why you should experience both.
6. Leave One Day Unplanned
No reservations, no checklist, no fixed route, just see where the day takes you. One unplanned afternoon gave us dolphins. Another led us to Greenr. Another became shopping, coffee, and chasing the year's final sunset. Some of our favourite memories happened because we stopped trying to optimise the trip. Leave a little room for Goa to surprise you.
7. Wake Up Early At Least Once
Everyone talks about Goa after dark. We think the mornings deserve equal attention. The beaches are quieter, the cafés haven't filled up yet, the air feels different. Some of our favourite breakfasts happened before we'd even decided what the day looked like. Don't sleep through every morning, Goa wakes up beautifully.
8. Say Yes to the Little Things
Get the beach braid. Buy the anklet. Drink the watermelon juice. Try the carrot cake everyone seems to recommend. Chat with the jewellery seller. You might forget the names of a few beaches, you probably won't forget these moments.
9. Let One Thing Go Wrong
This might be our favourite piece of advice. Something will go wrong, you'll miss a sunset, a café will be closed, the weather will change, a plan won't work. For us, it was New Year's Eve. Everything was packed, no seats, no food, no network. And somehow that chaotic evening became one of our favourite memories because a complete stranger made sure we had dinner before midnight. Goa has a funny way of turning imperfect days into unforgettable stories. Sometimes the best parts of a trip aren't the ones you planned, they're the ones that happened anyway.
We came back from Goa with far more than photographs. We came back with a different way of looking at ourselves. If you'd like to read about the feeling that eventually became our MOSAIC collection, you might enjoy reading The Mosaic Self: What Goa Taught Us About Becoming. Until then, we hope your Goa tells you a story of its own.
With love, always.
